What do I need to get started as a computer repair man?

I build my own computers, I know how to take care and maintain them and I also am very good with networking. Do you think this is all I would need to make my own computer repair business? The one guy in my area rips people off for doing things that I could do in 10 min, so I was thinking of making a business to compete against this guys. Any thoughts?

  1. you need to setup your business first. get that setup at city hall.
  2. You need some kind of certification. A degree in computer engineering would be excellent, or at least a Microsoft certification. If you plan on offering network services to businesses, you'll need CISCO certification as well. A Plus is good enough to cover the basic computer maintenance aspect. You also need to know how to run a business; you need to consider premises, city licenses, state and federal taxes and all the other aspects - marketing etc. One thing not to miss - you need liability insurance. If you damage a business machine and the business owner sues you for $1million because you lost all his business data, make sure you are covered. Since there are so many businesses in this sector, they'll be watching you - - unfortunately, business can be quite cut-throat. You are better to be only slightly under the competition in your pricing, so that you can build market share, and let your reputation for quality service be your best advertisement.
  3. Your best bet is to come up with a flyer or business card first off. You might want to call a lot of small businesses in your area and advertise your service then drop off a card to the right person. Even if you get several accounts this way, they make take up some of your time.
  4. You should do very well. Put an ad in your local papers... some flyers offer inexpensive space. People who hire you will be reading this old media... they are your potential customers.
